Between 1985-2005, the number of people suffering from diabetes worldwide skyrocketed from 30 to 230 million, claiming millions of lives and severely taxing health care systems. According to the International Diabetes Federation (‘IDF’) over 350 million people are expected to suffer from diabetes by 2016.
"Diabetes is one of the biggest health catastrophes the world has ever seen. The diabetes epidemic will overwhelm healthcare resources everywhere if governments do not wake up and take action now."
- Dr. Martin Silink, President-Elect of the IDF
Diabtetic retinopathy is one of the complications of diabetes and can be seen by examining the patient’s retina using a fundus camera.
CARA is an automated platform accessible securely over the internet. CARA is compatible with all recognized fundus cameras such as Zeiss, Topcon, Canon and Nidek.
Computer Assisted Retinal Analysis (CARA) is a web-based application that integrates fundus cameras with an image processing engine over a secure connection. The original and processed images are available to eye-care professionals over the web. CARA has been developed, by and is proprietary to DIAGNOS inc.
CARA performs a proprietary enhancement of fundus color images. This processing makes the manual screening of fundus images easier to read and to interpret. CARA also performs an automated analysis of fundus images for the presence of lesions indicative of diabetic retinopathy.
